—The Reckoning Manual

The Ripper Guard is one of three new varieties of Guard introduced in The Reckoning, equipped with an Ion Ripper. It has the distinction of being the most frequently-encountered enemy in The Reckoning (on the hardest difficulty settings, at least), but they do not appear in any other single-player campaign except for a pair of them appearing in one level of Call of the Machine.

Behaviour and attacks[]

Ion Ripper: The Guard fires volleys of three shots at a time from its Ion Ripper. The weapon functions like the Ion Ripper available to the player, but is much less powerful, dealing 5 damage per hit. The weapon is known for its ricochet shots, allowing this Guard to hit a target around cover to some extent.

Like the three Guards in the original Quake II, there is a chance the Ripper Guard will perform a final attack when it is killed but not gibbed. It falls onto its back, raises its weapon and fires two more shots directly forward before succumbing to death.

If the Ripper Guard loses sight of the player, it may continue to fire in the general direction of where it last saw the player. The same is true for the Light Guard and Hyperblaster Guard. However, in the Ripper Guard's case, there is the chance that the shots might bounce around cover to threaten the player.

Strategy[]

  • Always keep in mind that this guard's shots can ricochet and can hit you even if you took cover. Keep an eye on their trajectories - or, preferably, take him out before he has a chance to fire.
  • Remember that Ripper Guard is still a guard with slightly more health than a Machine Gun Guard. However, this increase in health is enough such that he will survive a single hit from the Shotgun. The Super Shotgun is a better choice at close range, or the Machine Gun remains a worthy weapon at any range capable of killing him with a brief burst. If larger groups are encountered, the Chain Gun might be a better option. If you feel like using your own Ion Ripper against a Ripper Guard, a single one of your own ripper shots is enough to drop him.

Trivia[]

  • On the harder difficulty settings, the Ripper Guard is the most common foe encountered in The Reckoning, with 144 Ripper Guards found in the single-player campaign on Hard or Nightmare - the closest contender being the Enforcer, encountered 131 times. However, on Easy or Medium difficulty, the Enforcer is the most common enemy. Ripper Guards are present in 13 different levels in The Reckoning's single-player campaign, tied with the Hyperblaster Guard for the most levels in which a particular enemy appears in this campaign.
