The Torture Chambers are the darkest and most gruesome area within the Jail Unit. Prisoners are kept there for one purpose - to be brutally tortured, for interrogation or simply for punishment. The facility is entirely underground and made up primarily of bare white stones.

There are various torture devices throughout the area and the Strogg have been using them very often of late - probably because they suspect one of the human prisoners holds a stolen Security Pass.

The player can visit this level or the Guard House in whichever order they prefer; either of which includes the opportunity to acquire a Hyperblaster and an Ammo Pack for the first time.

Secrets

  • Pc icon #1) Near the beginning of the level, you'll encounter a Tank and the elevator going down to the torture chambers. Before you activate the elevator, explore the area to the right of the wall to find a Hyperblaster and some Cells.
  • Pc icon #2) On the lower level of Cell Block A, you will notice a Marine on his hands and knees in front of a brick in one of the corner cells. Open the cell, put the Marine out of his misery and blow up the brick he was facing; this reveals an area you can crouch under to get to an Invulnerability.
  • Pc icon #3) In the torture room with a cage hovering over a central pool of lava, activate your Invulnerability and jump into the lava (yes, no joke); in here you will find your final secret, containing a Quad Damage, an Ammo Pack, and various types of Ammo. If you already used the Invulnerability, then it is technically possible to access this secret while only relying on Combat Armor and a Power Shield, but the player would certainly suffer severe damage, or quite possibly be killed if they didn't have sufficient armor/cells or wasn't quick enough.

PSX version:

  • PS1 icon #1) In the lower level of Cell Block A, one of the cells contains a cracked wall. Blast it open to reveal a Hyperblaster and some medikits.

Differences in the PSX version

  • Different enemy count and secrets (see above).
  • This level marks the first appearance of the Arachnid, a Strogg enemy not found in the PC version.
  • The Hyperblaster referenced in the PC version's Secret #1 is present, but it is not counted as a secret and it is located on the other side of the area.
  • The level is substantially shorter and doesn't include Cell Block B or the long underwater tunnel.
  • While the PC player uses a Data CD for access inside the Torture Chambers in order to collect a Security Pass for use in the security pyramid elsewhere, the PSX player uses the Security Pass for access inside the Torture Chambers to obtain a Pyramid Key.
  • The level doesn't contain an Ammo Pack, and there is nothing to be found in the lava pool. Furthermore, the button nearby doesn't lower the cage and its prisoner into the lava pool, but rather lowers it to the level of the walkway.
  • There is no secondary exit to this level leading to the upper sections of the Security Complex; instead, the player must return to the entrance.
