Countdown

[Source]
You have 30 seconds... collect what you can!

—Secondary objective

Sudden Death is a secret level in Unit 5 of Quake II. The level is accessed by jumping into the waterfall in outdoor area of the previous level, Receiving Center. It is unique among all of the levels in the original single-player campaign in that it contains no enemies. However, it is not entirely without hazards; it contains several pools of lava.

In this level the player has 30 seconds to run and grab health, ammo, Weapons and Powerups. The countdown begins as soon as the player moves forward from their starting position, and several screens on the walls show how many seconds remain. When the time runs out, the player will be instantly sent back to the Receiving Center and won't be able to access this level again for the rest of the game.

Goodies

Useful items that can be grabbed in this level include:

The Hyperblaster is in front of you as you begin the level. The Quad Damage can be seen through a window from the starting area, but to collect it you must refrain from standing on a floor switch in front of you; the button will lock the doors leading to the Quad Damage, preventing you from acquiring it. The Railgun can be acquired by pressing a floor switch at the other end of the level to drain a lava pool. The Power Shield is at the bottom of a lift in the middle of the level, and the Adrenaline is on the upper levels, accessible by that lift.

The level also contains a BFG10K (its first instance in Quake II) and a Silencer, but neither of them seem obtainable in single-player. It seems that they are deathmatch-only; in deathmatch they appear in chambers that can be reached by jumping, but in single-player the chambers are closed with no apparent way to open them.

Enemies

This level does not contain any enemies.

Trivia

  • Originally, this was the only level in a single-player Quake II campaign which did not include any enemies. However, as of the 2023 remaster, this is also the case in Strogg Gateway in Call of the Machine.
