Proceed north to Big Gun area. Infiltrate and destroy Strogg main reactor.

—Mission briefing

The Power Plant is the external section of the huge Strogg power production facility. It consists mostly of vents, which continually spew out jets of fire and hot fumes. The air is filled with the incessant roar of machinery.

This level introduces the Power Unit's distinct visual style, which features numerous unique metallic textures. It marks the first appearance of the Iron Maiden, and it is the player's first opportunity to collect the BFG10K - the weapon was present in a previous level, but there is no known way to retrieve it. It is also the player's first opportunity to acquire Body Armor.

Secrets

  • Pc icon #1) Enter the blue hallway with the Berserkers, head left at the intersection and look up; the right light is sparking. Shoot the light to open a secret compartment ahead of you with an Adrenaline and two Large Health boxes.
  • Pc icon #2) Immediately after getting this secret, look down the stairs to spot a large collection of explosive barrels by the wall. Blow them up to blow open the wall, revealing a secret path that will lead you to some enemies, as well as the final new weapon of the game (and by far the most powerful); the BFG10K.
  • Pc icon Non-secret: after collecting the Chain Gun near the door requiring the Red Key, you may return to the hallway and find a section opposite Secret #1 has opened, releasing two Iron Maidens. An Invulnerability can be found from where they emerged.

PSX version:

  • PS1 icon #1 and #2) In the junction beyond the red lasers, a wall section on both the left and the right of the door can be shot open. One contains a Quad Damage, the other a Combat Armor.
  • PS1 icon #3) After obtaining the Red Key from the lower levels of the starting area, proceed to the central chamber just beyond the windows next to the Red Key. There is a cracked section of wall in the far left corner, leading to a secret area containing a Combat Armor. Enemies will be encountered along the way.

Differences in the PSX version

  • Different enemy count and secrets (see above). Notably, the level contains Arachnids but no Super Tank.
  • The previous level was Grid Control, since the PSX version doesn't include the Mine or Factory units.
  • The level doesn't contain a BFG10K or Body Armor, which can first be acquired here in the PC version. In the PSX version, Body Armor isn't acquired until the Reactor, and the BFG10K can be obtained in Pumping Station 1.
  • The aforementioned non-secret Invulnerability from the PC version is not present, being replaced by the Quad Damage which is counted as a secret.
