In Quake II, the Ammo Pack is a powerup that increases the maximum amount of ammunition a player can carry for almost every type of ammo. In addition, it contains an immediate ammo bonus for almost all types of ammo. It is essentially a superior version of the Bandolier.

Note that it doesn't stack with the Bandolier. Upon collecting an Ammo Pack, your maximum ammo capacity will be increased to the amounts detailed below, regardless of whether you already had a Bandolier or not.

If you collect another Ammo Pack later, your maximum ammo capacity won't increase any further, but you will still receive the immediate ammo bonus.

The 2023 remaster fixes a oversight for the Ammo Pack in regard to flechettes, and it now contains Rounds for the Disruptor weapon.

The first opportunity to obtain an Ammo Pack in each campaign are as follows:

Quake II Torture Chambers and Guard House (whichever the player chooses to visit first)

Strategies[]

Single Player[]

  • In Single Player, the Ammo Pack is invaluable, allowing you to stockpile larger amounts of ammo, so be sure to pick it up at the first opportunity. Furthermore, given how effective the Power Shield is, the ability to carry more cells can be considered to be a defensive upgrade as well. Even once you've collected one to increase your overall capacity, further Ammo Pack pickups are useful to top up your ammo supplies.

Multiplayer[]

  • Like the Bandolier, the Ammo Pack is almost completely useless in multiplayer. Since you'll rarely hit maximum ammo without it, there's no need to go out of your way and get it. Even the ammo it gives you isn't worth it, as it's much easier to find a ammo pickup for the ammo you need than it is to hunt down a pack.

Trivia[]

  • In the original Ground Zero expansion, the Ammo Pack does not increase your capacity for Flechettes for the ETF Rifle, but the Bandolier does. Usually, the Ammo Pack increases your ammo capacity more so than the Bandolier, but not in this case (the Ammo Pack does give you an immediate bonus of 50 Flechettes, however). This may have been an oversight, but has been fixed in the 2023 remaster.
  • Neither the Bandolier nor the Ammo Pack increase your maximum capacity for Traps, Tesla Mines or Prox.

Zaero[]

In the unofficial mission pack Zaero, the Ammo Pack increases the player's capacity for IREDs from 30 to 100, and the capacity for EMP Nukes from 50 to 100. It also confers three IREDs and one EMP Nuke upon collection.
