Altar of Pain is a Single Player level in Aftershock for Quake. This is a relatively large level and is intended to have challenging portions. This is T. H. Johansen's first level. It was designed with Single Player in mind, meaning that while he planned to add Deathmatch spawn points he did not feel that this level would be good in that Game Mode.

Story

The Interdimensional Intelligence Agency (IIA) has got information that an evil and devastating ceremony is about to take place in what is whispered to be the "Altar of Pain", a demonic chapel where hideous Shamblers are said to rule. Somebody has to stop the ceremony from being fullfilled, or else the world is doomed to be ruled by dark and evil forces for all eternity. But to get there will take a strong effort, the IIA has realized.

Therefore, having saved the world once, the IIA has called upon you to take the task to penetrate these Shamblers' stronghold and get to their chapel before it's too late. The IIA transports you through their only remaining slipgate, and you find yourself in a dark and gloomy basement. Getting your dark vision quickly tuned in, the first thing you spot is enemy soldiers and their rottweilers. OK, you're alone, it's pretty dark, but you know that you're not going to disappoint the IIA or yourself. Firmly you pump some lead into that old thrustworthy shotgun of yours and get on with it...

Quick Level Completion

  • Proceed forward, then head up the staircase in front of you.
  • Jump onto the floor at the top to reach the Silver Door, then turn around and head around the hole.
  • Hit the Wall straight ahead to reveal a room beyond.
  • Proceed forward to collect the Silver Key, then return to the Silver Door.
  • Continue forward into the next room, then drop to the floor below.
  • Turn left, then proceed forward and drop into the Water.
  • Swim right to collect the Yellow Armor, then proceed forward to reach an Elevator.
  • Ascend the Elevator to reach the top, straight ahead is the Gold Door.
  • Turn around, then cross the bridge to your left.
  • Turn right, then proceed forward to reach a wall before turning right once more.
  • Proceed forward to collect a Grenade Launcher, then turn right and drop once more to the floor below.
  • Proceed forward to collect the Gold Key, then return to the Gold Door.
  • Press the Button to your left to lower the Elevator straight ahead.
  • Ascend the Elevator, then proceed forward and head down a staircase.
  • Step onto the Elevator in the middle of the next room, then turn around at the top.
  • Proceed forward to reach a wall, then turn right.
  • Continue forward to reach a locked Door, then turn right and kill a Vore.
  • Turn right, then proceed up the corridor and collect the Rune of Elder Magic in the upper right corner.
  • Turn around once more, then proceed forward through the previously locked Door.
  • Turn right, then head down the corridor and pass a box.
  • About halfway between the box and the end of the corridor, hit the Wall to the left.
  • Head through the newly opened doorway straight ahead, then drop to the floor below.
  • Hit the Wall in the upper left corner to reveal a room beyond, then proceed through the newly opened doorway.
  • Proceed forward to a wall, then turn left and hit a Wall to reveal a room beyond.
  • Head through the newly opened doorway, then continue forward down a staircase.
  • Turn right at the bottom and head forward to reach a wall, then turn right once more to drop to the floor below.
  • Go through the Teleporter in the upper right corner of the room.
  • Proceed forward to collect the Rune of Hell Magic, then drop to the floor straight ahead.
  • Proceed forward to reach an Elevator, then allow it to ascend to the top.
  • Head forward to collect the Rune of Black Magic.
  • Jump onto the platform straight ahead, then proceed forward to exit the level.

Walkthrough

Straight ahead are three doorways. Turn left, then proceed forward to collect the Shells. Turn right, then head down the corridor to kill a Grunt and 2 Rottweilers. Turn around, then proceed back up the corridor, turning left at the opposite side. Collect the Shells in the upper right corner, then turn left. Proceed forward to kill the 2 Rottweilers and Grunt. Turn around, then proceed once more up the corridor. Turn right at the end, then proceed to the halfway point, turning right in the middle of the room. Proceed forward to collect a Double-Barrelled Shotgun. You will receive the message "Altar of Pain - Prelude -". Continue forward to kill a Grunt. Climb the staircase straight ahead, then jump forward at the top to reach the floor above. Straight ahead is the Silver Door. Turn around, then kill the 2 Grunts, 1 in the upper left corner and 1 in the upper right corner. Head around the hole of the staircase, then proceed forward to collect the Shells. Walking forward to the nearby Wall will cause the message "A secret door will open..." to be displayed. Hit the Shootable Wall straight ahead to reveal a room beyond, then proceed forward to enter the newly revealed room. Kill the 2 Ogres, 1 in the upper left corner and 1 in the upper right corner. Turn around, then kill the 2 Enforcers, 1 in the upper left corner and 1 in the upper right corner. Turn around once more, then collect the 25 Health from the upper left corner. Turn right, then head around the pillars to collect the 15 Health in the upper left corner. Turn around once more, then head around the first pillar and enter the alcove to the right. Collect the Silver Key, which will cause the message "You got the Silver Key!" to be displayed.

Return to the Silver Door and proceed through it. The message "Enter Part I - The Relay" will be displayed. Kill the Grunt straight ahead, then proceed forward into the next room. Turn right to kill a Knight, then turn around to kill another Knight. Kill the 2 Scrags straight ahead. Ignore the pathway to the right as it leads to a Wall which displays the message "Not this way, yet...". Instead, turn around and proceed to the opposite side to collect the Nails. Turn left, then cross the bridge straight ahead. Collect the Nailgun on the middle of the bridge, then proceed forward to finish crossing the bridge. Kill the Ogre and Enforcer straight ahead. Collect the Nails from the lower right corner, then collect the Shells and 25 Health from the upper right corner. Turn left, then proceed forward to reach the opposite side of the room. Collect the 15 Health and Nails from the upper right corner, then turn left and proceed forward. Collect the 25 Health beside the far wall, then turn around to look once more into the room. Proceed forward to pass a pit on your right, then go into the doorway to your right. Kill the 2 Knights straight ahead. The Gold Door is straight ahead, so instead turn around once more and drop into the pit you previously ignored to reach the Water below. The middle of this section has an Elevator which allows for a return to the floor above. Swim forward to reach the wall straight ahead, then proceed forward through the wall to collect a Yellow Armor. You will receive the message "A barrier has disappeared...". Avoid the 2 Zombies straight ahead, instead leaving the Water by climbing onto the platform to the left. Avoid the 3 Zombies straight ahead, instead collecting the Nails in the lower left corner. Turn right, then proceed forward to the opposite side to kill the Fiend and collect the Shells. Turn left, then proceed to the upper right corner of the room to kill a Fiend. Return to the Elevator and use it to return to the floor above. Return to the opposite side of the bridge, then turn right and proceed forward to the wall. Turn right, then proceed forward once more to collect the Grenade Launcher and Rockets in the newly revealed alcove. You will receive the message "A platform has lowered in the pit...". Turn right, then drop into the Water below to return to the area near the Yellow Armor. Turn right to kill 2 Zombies, then climb onto the floor to the left to leave the Water. Kill the 3 Zombies straight ahead, then proceed forward to the lowered Elevator to collect the Gold Key.

Return to the Gold Door and go through it. You will receive the message "Enter Part 2 - The Elder Cave". Press the Button to your left to lower the Elevator straight ahead. Use the Elevator to reach the upper floor, then kill the Fiend straight ahead. Proceed forward down a staircase to kill a Death Knight. Continue forward into the next room, then kill the Rottweiler in the upper left corner. Turn around, then kill the 2 Ogres, 1 in the upper left corner and 1 in the upper right corner. Use the Elevator in the middle of the room to reach the upper floor, then proceed forward to leave the Elevator. Turn around to kill the Death Knight. Turn left, then proceed forward to collect the 25 Health. Turn right, then proceed forward to collect the Rockets. Turn left, then proceed forward to the middle of the room and turn left. Proceed forward to collect a Super Nailgun, then continue forward to reach the next room. Proceed forward, then turn left to kill a Knight. The Rune of Elder Magic exists on the Platform to your right, though it is too high to reach. Turn around, then proceed forward to kill a Zombie. Continue forward, then kill the Ogre to the left and Vore to your right. You will receive a message - "The Elder Rune has been accessible...". The Door to the left is locked, moving close to it will cause the message "You need to possess the Elder Rune!" to be displayed. Turn right, then return up the corridor to collect the Rune of Elder Magic in the upper right corner on top of the lowered Elevator.

The Door that was previously locked will be opened. The message "On to Part 3, The Inner Sanctuary..." will be displayed. Turn around, then head up the corridor to go through the newly opened doorway. Kill the Vore straight ahead. Turn right to collect the Nails beside the nearby wall. Go through the doorway to your left, then proceed forward to collect the 25 Health. Continue down the corridor to collect the Rocket Launcher. Proceed forward to pass a box on your right, then kill the Fiend to your right. Continue forward to collect the Rockets to your right. Kill the Vore at the far end of the corridor, then proceed forward to reach a staircase. Leap up the steps to collect a Quad Damage at the top. Turn around, then proceed down the steps to return to the lower floor. Proceed down the corridor to be halfway between the staircase and box to your left, then turn right to hit a Shootable Wall to reveal a room beyond. Proceed through the newly opened doorway, then drop to the floor below. Kill the Death Knight to the left and the 3 Zombies to the right. The Elevator to the right allows a return to the doorway above. Proceed forward to collect the Rockets. Turn around once more, then proceed to the opposite side of the room. Hit the Wall in the upper right corner to reveal a room beyond. Go through the newly revealed doorway to collect a Pentagram of Protection. Proceed forward to reach the wall, then turn left and hit the Wall straight ahead to reveal a room beyond. Proceed forward through the newly opened doorway to collect a Red Armor. Turn right to see a Wall closing at the top of the stairs as the message "The Door is blocked!" is displayed. Kill the Rottweiler on the stairs. Turn left and proceed down the staircase, then kill the 2 Fiends on the platform at the bottom. Turn right, then proceed forward to reach a wall before turning right once more. Kill the Shambler, 2 Vores, Death Knight, and Spawn on the floor below. Drop to the lower floor, then turn right. Proceed forward to collect a 25 Health, then turn right. Proceed forward to collect the Nails, then turn right. Proceed forward to collect the 25 Health and Shells, then turn right. Pass the Elevator straight ahead, which allows access to the previous floor, then go through the Teleporter in the upper right corner. Proceed forward to collect the Rune of Hell Magic. An Elevator will be lowered straight ahead on the floor below, you will also receive the message "The Nether Rune activated a platform...". Drop to the lower floor to kill a Death Knight and Fiend, then turn around. Proceed forward to collect the Cells and 15 Health while killing the Ogre. Turn around once more, then proceed up the corridor. At the halfway point, a Button on the left opens a Wall on the right, the one that previously was blocked at the top of the staircase in the previous room. Continue past the Button to collect the Nails. Proceed forward to collect a Thunderbolt and ascend an Elevator to reach the floor above. Proceed forward to leave the Elevator. Kill the 3 Shamblers; 1 to the left, 1 to the right, and 1 straight ahead. Collect the 100 Health in the lower left corner and the Quad Damage in the lower right corner. Proceed to the middle of the room to your left, then continue forward to collect the Rune of Black Magic and receive the message "You Got the Black Magic Rune!". Leap up to the platform straight ahead, then push the Button in front of you to exit the level.
